Idaho Springs – Montrose, CO

This morning we went up to the top of Mt. Evans which happens to be the highest paved road in the United States. It was absolutely ridiculous. There was just hairpin turn after hairpin turn and not to mention a sudden drop right next to the road. It was actually frightening at some points. The even crazier thing was that there were tons of bicyclists riding up the mountain (and even a guy riding a unicycle). Once we got closer to the top of the mountain we spotted four mountain goats standing in the middle of the road. We did not want to spook them so we stopped and I walked up to them to get a picture. Surprisingly, a car drove by them and they still did not move, but they did not really like me walking up right next to them, so they headed down the mountain a bit. Eventually, we made it to the top and explored a little. After walking around for a bit we headed back down the mountain and had some breakfast back in Idaho springs at “Marion’s of the Rockies.” After breakfast we hopped on rt 70 west and got off at rt 6. On rt 6 we passed the continental divide at Loveland Pass where the wind was howling. We thought we were going to get blown off the road, but fortunately we didn’t. Eventually, rt 6 met back up with rt 70 west and we took that to rt 91 south through Leadville. Then we got on rt 24 east through Buena Vista to rt 50 west and ended up in Montrose, CO. The scenery was beautiful through all of these roads. There were hardly any houses. There was just a lot of farms, wide open spaces, windy roads, mountains, lakes, and creeks. Today, I think I mastered the art of photographing while riding. So here are some shots I took on and off the bike.

Amy, these photos are unreal. They are so fantastic. Looks like you’re having an amazing time! What a cool grad gift. I particularly love the first pic of the animal whatever it is, it’s like, smiling for you. It was probably a better model than most of us… haha.
